St. Louis County is seeking a Veterinarian to join its team in Crugers, Westchester County, overseeing animal health at the county's shelters.
About the Role
This full‑time position provides medical leadership for all animals housed in St. Louis County’s shelter system. The veterinarian ensures humane care, disease prevention, and timely treatment while collaborating with shelter staff and volunteers. On‑call and weekend availability may be required, with flexibility to negotiate schedules upon hire.
What You'll Do
- Perform physical examinations, diagnose illnesses, and develop treatment plans for shelter animals.
- Administer vaccinations, parasite control, and routine medical procedures.
- Conduct surgeries, including spay/neuter operations, and manage post‑operative care.
- Oversee infection control protocols and maintain accurate medical records.
- Provide guidance to shelter staff on animal wellness, nutrition, and behavioral health.
- Respond to emergency cases and participate in after‑hours on‑call rotations as needed.
- Assist with intake assessments and advise on adoption suitability.
- Stay current with veterinary best practices and shelter medicine advancements.
What We're Looking For
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited college.
- Active veterinary license to practice in the state of New York.
- Experience in shelter medicine, high‑volume spay/neuter, or public‑health veterinary settings is preferred.
- Strong surgical skills and comfort performing routine and emergency procedures.
- Excellent communication abilities for interacting with staff, volunteers, and the public.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional nights, weekends, and on‑call shifts.
- Commitment to animal welfare and a collaborative, team‑oriented mindset.
