About the Role
As an Operator Apprentice 1, you will work alongside experienced team members to learn the core processes that keep our sawmill running efficiently. The role emphasizes safety, reliability, and a willingness to develop technical skills that support West Fraser’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
What You'll Do
- Assist senior operators in setting up, starting, and shutting down sawmill equipment
- Monitor machine performance and make basic adjustments to maintain optimal output
- Perform routine inspections, cleaning, and preventive maintenance on assigned machinery
- Follow all safety protocols, report hazards, and participate in daily safety briefings
- Record production data, material usage, and equipment metrics accurately in logbooks or digital systems
- Support material handling tasks, including loading, unloading, and moving lumber with forklifts or pallet jacks
- Participate in on‑the‑job training sessions and complete required competency checklists
- Help maintain a clean and troubleshoot minor issues under supervision
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training is a plus
- Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial machinery
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and ability to follow detailed procedures
- Reliable attendance, punctuality, and a positive, team‑oriented attitude
- Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods in a manufacturing environment
- Good communication skills and willingness to ask questions to facilitate learning
- No prior experience required; we provide comprehensive training for motivated candidates
