Senior Mechanical Engineer

STR

About the Team:

STR’s Space Missions and Sensing (SMS) Sector’s mission is to develop and apply innovative technology to space-based sensing, space control, and counter-sensing. Within the SMS Sector, the Space and Counter Space (SCS) team is at the forefront in electronic warfare technologies.  Our team strives to bring critical and transformational capabilities to the warfighter through creative ideas and techniques.  To realize the value, the team develops both engineering and operational prototypes to demonstrate capabilities in real world environments.

STR takes pride in our ability to address warfighter operational needs. Our core team includes principal investigators, program managers, signal processors, SW developers, FPGA expertise, RF and Electromagnetic engineers, and mechanical design experts.  Our facilities support on site build and test (benchtop, anechoic chamber, and over the air).  We collaborate with a dynamic group of research engineers across STR, academic researchers, and industry partners to develop practical and effective solutions to RF sensing and counter-sensing challenges.

The work program is growing, with strong demand signal from our sponsors.  We are seeking mechanical engineering design, development, and integration support for advanced and operational prototype systems. If you’re seeking an opportunity to apply your deep technical knowledge and creativity to make a lasting impact in national security, we invite you to join us.

The Role:

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work with a team to design, build, integrate, and test sensing and counter sensing systems for radar, electronic warfare, sonar, and other applications. Systems predominantly field deployable prototypes with the objective of transitioning to low-volume product systems.

Who you are:

  • Proficient in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools like SolidWorks, enabling precise design and visualization of mechanical components
  • Knowledgeable in FEA techniques to simulate physical phenomena and predict how products will react to real-world forces
  • Proficient in planning, executing, and monitoring and reporting project progress. Strong record keeping skills that trace design evolution
  • Experience in rapid prototype development to test and validate designs before full-scale production
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with the team to quantify goals, system performance objectives, metrics, dependencies, and risks to guide our work
  • Understanding of industry regulations and standards ensures that designs comply with safety and environmental guidelines
  • Familiar with development of performance trade studies and analyses of proposed hardware architectures. Systems predominantly field deployable prototypes with the objective of transitioning to low-volume product systems
  • Ability to convey complex technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including for customer review.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is required by U.S. Government
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline with 5 years of experience, or MS with 3 years of experience
  • Strong Mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills

Even Better:

  • Active Secret or TS/SCI Clearance
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline
  • Prior design experiences in: Electronics packaging for harsh environments, rapid prototyping, antenna and RF system design, field testing.
  • Background in designing for manufacturability, producibility, and cost constraints
