Amazon is hiring a Research Scientist for Operational Efficiency in the AET Planning and Analytics Science organization, based in Bellevue, King County. This full-time position offers the opportunity to shape the science and strategy that enables Amazon to effectively manage, optimize, and support its global workforce of 1.5 million employees.

About the Role

The AET Planning and Analytics Science team develops the analytical and operational research foundation that drives Amazon's most critical people and resource decisions. As a Research Scientist in this group, you'll own complex, high-impact projects spanning demand forecasting, work optimization, and causal inference. Your work directly influences how Amazon allocates resources across HR services and routes work assignments in real time at global scale—with measurable impact on both operational costs and employee experience.

What You'll Do

  • Design and implement operations research models to forecast HR service demand and optimize resource allocation across Amazon's global operations
  • Develop causal inference methodologies to isolate the impact of policy changes, process improvements, and organizational initiatives on business outcomes
  • Build predictive models and optimization algorithms for work routing and assignment, improving both efficiency and employee experience
  • Translate research findings into actionable insights and recommendations for senior leadership and operational teams
  • Collaborate across teams in HR, Finance, and Operations to define analytical requirements and deliver solutions to enterprise-scale problems
  • Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the development of reusable methodologies and tools for the broader organization

What We're Looking For

  • MS or PhD in Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven expertise in causal inference, operations research, or statistical modeling applied to business problems
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, SQL, or similar languages for data analysis and model implementation
  • Experience designing and analyzing experiments, including A/B testing and observational studies
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Problem-solving mindset with focus on business impact and scalability
