Abraham Joshua Heschel School on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is hiring a full-time Lower School Permanent Substitute Teacher to join our educators for the 2025-26 school year. This is an excellent opportunity to provide continuity and quality instruction across our Lower School while gaining meaningful classroom experience in a vibrant, values-driven community.
About the Role
As a Permanent Substitute Teacher in our Lower School, you'll serve as a reliable instructional presence within our classrooms, stepping in to ensure uninterrupted learning when primary teachers are absent. This full-time, exempt position follows our standard five-day weekly schedule and offers flexible classroom assignments based on school needs. You may lead instruction in a single classroom throughout the day or rotate among multiple classes, and occasionally support other divisions as required to meet operational demands.
What You'll Do
- Deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction by following established lesson plans and curriculum guidelines
- Foster a positive, structured classroom environment that supports student learning and behavioral expectations
- Manage transitions, independent work, and collaborative activities with Lower School students
- Supervise students during class time, specials, and other supervised periods
- Communicate key observations and feedback to primary teachers and school administration
- Support students with diverse learning needs, maintaining inclusive classroom practices
- Collaborate with colleagues to maintain continuity in school operations and culture
What We're Looking For
- Valid teaching certification or credential appropriate for Lower School instruction
- Demonstrated ability to manage classroom dynamics and engage elementary-age learners
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple classroom assignments
- Excellent communication skills and professional demeanor with students, families, and staff
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment
- Reliability and flexibility to adapt to changing classroom needs
