CincyBrianHires is seeking a Founding Backend Engineer to lead and build the core systems powering an AI-driven education platform. This full-time position is based in San Francisco, California, where you'll drive the technical foundation for an innovative B2B education startup with active users and strong institutional support.
About the Role
As a Founding Backend Engineer, you will own the architecture and implementation of the systems that enable the platform's AI assistant to function reliably and scale with demand. This high-autonomy position offers immediate impact—your decisions will shape the technical direction of the company and your work will be directly visible in how users experience the product every day.
What You'll Do
- Design and build robust backend systems and APIs that power the AI education platform
- Develop context retrieval systems that enable the AI assistant to deliver accurate, contextual responses
- Build and optimize data pipelines for seamless integration with AI and machine learning components
- Architect databases and data models to support rapid feature development and scaling
- Ensure system reliability, performance, and security across the platform
- Make critical technology decisions about infrastructure and system design as part of a founding team
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience building scalable backend systems and distributed services
- Strong foundation in backend programming and software architecture
- Familiarity with AI and machine learning systems, and how to integrate them into production platforms
- Ownership mindset—you thrive when given autonomy and responsibility for outcomes
- Experience building B2B or education software products (preferred)
- Ability to balance rapid iteration with thoughtful long-term technical planning
