Staff Software Engineer, Android

Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer specializing in Android development to join our team in the US. As a full-time, on-site Staff Engineer, you'll lead the architecture, design, and development of critical Android systems while mentoring engineers and shaping our mobile engineering culture.

This Staff role represents a significant opportunity to influence the technical direction of our Android platform—from infrastructure decisions to product-level implementation. You'll work across the full stack of mobile systems, collaborate with product and research teams, and take ownership of large-scope initiatives that impact how our users interact with AI technology.

What You'll Do

• Design and architect Android systems that scale reliably and serve as technical models for the team
• Lead technical decisions on platform frameworks, dependencies, tooling, and development practices
• Review complex code changes, guide junior and mid-level engineers, and maintain high technical standards
• Build features and systems that bring AI safety and alignment principles into practical, user-facing applications
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand product needs and translate them into robust Android implementations
• Identify technical debt, propose solutions, and drive modernization efforts that improve maintainability and performance

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of professional Android development experience, with demonstrated expertise in system-level design and architecture
• Strong proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java, with deep familiarity with the Android framework and ecosystem
• Track record of leading complex technical initiatives, mentoring engineers, and influencing engineering culture
• Experience designing systems for reliability, performance, and scalability at the platform level
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
• Genuine interest in AI safety and beneficial AI systems
