About the Role

As a College Advising Mentor Specialist, you'll be at the heart of our mission to increase college attendance and graduation rates among young men of color. You'll build meaningful relationships with students, offering personalized guidance on college selection, application strategies, and the transition to higher education. This position offers the opportunity to directly impact students' futures while contributing to systemic change in educational equity and social mobility.

What You'll Do

  • Provide individualized college advising and mentorship to students navigating the college preparation process
  • Guide students through college selection, application completion, personal essay development, and financial aid navigation
  • Support students in developing academic plans, setting realistic goals, and building college readiness skills
  • Track student progress and maintain detailed records of advising sessions, interactions, and outcomes
  • Collaborate with schools, families, and community partners to create supportive networks around student success
  • Help students build confidence, resilience, and agency as they pursue higher education opportunities
  • Stay current on college admissions trends, scholarship opportunities, and institutional policies affecting student enrollment

What We're Looking For

  • Demonstrated passion for supporting young men of color in achieving their educational and career aspirations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with students and families
  • Knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid systems, and higher education pathways
  • Ability to thrive in a mission-driven, collaborative environment and manage multiple student cases
  • Deep commitment to educational equity and understanding of systemic barriers facing underrepresented students
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with strong attention to detail
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in education, student services, or a related field

The Tenderloin is a neighborhood in downtown San Francisco, in the flatlands on the southern slope of Nob Hill, situated between the Union Square shopping district to the northeast and the Civic Center office district to the southwest. Encompassing about fifty square blocks, it is historically bounded on the north by Geary Street, on the east by Mason Street, on the south by Market Street and on the west by Van Ness Avenue. The northern boundary with Lower Nob Hill has historically been set at Geary Boulevard.
