About the Role

The Sous Chef at Akers Dining Services plays a vital role in executing our culinary vision while ensuring consistent quality and safety across all meal services. You'll manage day-to-day kitchen operations, oversee food preparation, and develop the next generation of culinary professionals on our team. This position bridges the gap between executive leadership and production staff, requiring both strong technical cooking skills and the ability to inspire and train others.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and supervise dining production staff during daily meal service operations
  • Train kitchen personnel on cooking techniques, food safety protocols, and service standards
  • Collaborate with the Executive Chef on menu planning, food sourcing, and ingredient ordering
  • Prepare and cook high-volume meals while maintaining consistent quality and presentation standards
  • Conduct regular inspections of kitchen equipment, identifying maintenance issues and ensuring proper functionality
  • Monitor inventory management and food costs to maximize operational efficiency
  • Maintain strict adherence to health, safety, and sanitation regulations in all food preparation areas
  • Support special events and catering operations as needed within university dining facilities

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or similar leadership position in a high-volume food service environment
  • Strong knowledge of cooking techniques, food safety, and culinary best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to train, motivate, and manage kitchen staff effectively
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills in fast-paced settings
  • Leadership mentality with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
  • Valid Food Safety certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
