Tribune Media Company is hiring a Full-Time Assignment Desk Editor to lead coverage coordination for NewsNation's national assignment desk in New York City. In this union position, you'll be central to orchestrating real-time story coverage across our 24-hour cable news network—ensuring that morning, dayside, and primetime programming deliver the breaking news and in-depth reporting our audience depends on.
About the Role
The Assignment Desk Editor manages the daily assignment workflow across NewsNation's national news operations. You'll work from our New York offices at the hub of decision-making, translating editorial priorities into active coverage plans, coordinating reporter and crew deployments, and maintaining flexibility as news breaks throughout the day. This role demands both strategic thinking and quick decision-making in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment.
What You'll Do
- Monitor developing stories and assign coverage across morning, dayside, and primetime dayparts
- Coordinate with reporters, photographers, and field crews to position resources for breaking news and enterprise stories
- Collaborate with producers and editorial leadership to align coverage with network priorities
- Track story development, organize assignment logistics, and maintain clear communication with on-air and digital teams
- Respond dynamically to emerging news, adjusting assignments and resource allocation as the day unfolds
- Support the network's reach and credibility by ensuring comprehensive coverage of national stories from multiple angles
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience in a newsroom assignment role or equivalent editorial coordination position
- Deep understanding of news judgment, editorial standards, and national story importance
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities simultaneously
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to coordinate effectively across teams
- Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment with breaking news and shifting priorities
- Knowledge of the national news landscape and current events
- Familiarity with newsroom management systems and assignment tracking tools is a plus
