The University of South Florida is seeking a Mate for the Florida Institute of Oceanography in Saint Petersburg, Pinellas County. This is a full-time position supporting marine research and educational operations along Florida's Gulf Coast.
About the Role
As a Mate with the Florida Institute of Oceanography at USF St. Petersburg, you will serve as an essential member of our marine operations team. This role requires expertise in vessel operations, crew management, and adherence to maritime safety protocols. You'll directly support oceanographic research initiatives, educational programs, and field deployments that advance scientific discovery and environmental stewardship in the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding waters.
What You'll Do
- Assist in operating and navigating research vessels during scientific expeditions
- Maintain vessel systems, rigging, equipment, and safety gear per maritime standards
- Coordinate safe operations between research teams and deck crew
- Maintain detailed logs and documentation of all vessel activities and maintenance
- Oversee crew training and enforcement of onboard safety protocols
- Monitor weather, sea conditions, and provide operational recommendations
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot marine equipment issues
- Support loading, securing, and deployment of scientific instrumentation
What We're Looking For
- Valid maritime licenses and certifications required for this position
- Hands-on experience in commercial or research vessel operations
- Comprehensive knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations and maritime safety standards
- Proven ability to lead and work collaboratively with diverse crew and research personnel
- Physical capability to work in marine environments in varying conditions
- Strong organizational skills and attention to operational detail
- Flexibility for variable schedules, including multi-day research deployments

Compensation
This position offers a competitive salary of $64,734 to $78,328 based on experience. Position numbers 100003370 and 100007152.
