The City of San Bernardino is hiring a City Planner (U) to lead strategic planning initiatives in one of Southern California's most dynamic communities. About the Role

As City Planner (U), you'll direct planning programs and major initiatives that guide development and growth across San Bernardino. This leadership position plays a central role in advancing the City's strategic vision while overseeing planning department operations and setting the direction for the community's future.

What You'll Do

  • Oversee comprehensive planning efforts, including long-range land-use strategy, zoning policy development, and General Plan implementation
  • Review and evaluate development proposals, ensuring alignment with City codes, planning policies, and sustainability standards
  • Lead planning commission meetings and present recommendations to City Council on major projects and policy decisions
  • Collaborate with community stakeholders, developers, departments, and local organizations to advance projects supporting housing growth and economic development
  • Direct planning department budget, staff, and programs aligned with San Bernardino's growth and revitalization priorities
  • Develop and implement policies that support equitable, sustainable, and inclusive development throughout the City
  • Prepare planning studies, analyses, and recommendations for significant projects and policy initiatives

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, or related field, or equivalent professional planning experience
  • 5+ years of planning experience, including land-use planning, development review, and policy work in a municipal setting
  • Strong knowledge of California planning law, zoning regulations, and local government planning requirements
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to manage planning departments or major planning initiatives
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills, with proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse communities
  • AICP certification (American Institute of Certified Planners) or eligibility to obtain within one year of hire
