About the Role
As an adjunct faculty member, you will teach music theory and composition courses to undergraduates and graduate students. This position offers the opportunity to shape emerging musicians' understanding of harmonic language, form, orchestration, and creative expression while contributing to a vibrant academic music community.
What You'll Do
- Teach course sections in music theory, composition, or both, depending on departmental needs and your expertise
- Develop lesson plans and curriculum materials that engage students in rigorous theoretical study and compositional practice
- Evaluate student work through assignments, projects, and examinations
- Hold regular office hours to support student learning and provide individual instruction
- Mentor students in their creative development and academic progress
- Participate in department meetings and academic activities as appropriate
- Maintain current knowledge of pedagogical best practices and developments in music theory and composition
What We're Looking For
- A Master's degree or PhD in Music Theory, Composition, or a closely related field (or near completion of a graduate degree)
- Minimum of prior teaching experience at the college level or equivalent demonstration of teaching ability
- Strong commitment to student-centered education and mentorship
- Active engagement in music research or creative work
- Excellent communication skills and ability to convey complex musical concepts clearly
- Proficiency in music notation software and standard digital audio tools
- Flexibility to teach across music theory and composition based on program needs
