Join City of Cocoa as a Full-Time Heavy Equipment Operator and play a critical role in maintaining and improving Brevard County's infrastructure. Located in Cocoa, this position offers skilled work operating heavy automotive and highway construction equipment under the direction of experienced supervisory staff.
About the Role
As a Heavy Equipment Operator for the City, you'll operate and maintain heavy automotive equipment and complex highway construction and maintenance machinery. You'll perform essential infrastructure work—from road maintenance to construction projects—with precision, safety, and accountability for both equipment and property. This role reports directly to a Crew Leader, Utility Mechanic II, or Supervisor III.
What You'll Do
- Operate heavy equipment and construction machinery safely and efficiently on city infrastructure projects and maintenance activities
- Perform routine equipment inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure all machinery operates without defects
- Follow established safety protocols and city guidelines to protect equipment, property, and personnel
- Collaborate with crew members and supervisors to complete highway construction and maintenance work on schedule
- Maintain accurate equipment logs and report maintenance issues and operational concerns to supervisory staff
- Work in varying weather and outdoor conditions to support the City's infrastructure and public services
What We're Looking For
- Valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record
- Proven experience operating heavy automotive and construction equipment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform routine equipment maintenance
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and OSHA guideline compliance
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively under supervisory direction
- Physical capability to work outdoors and perform manual labor in all weather conditions
- Excellent attention to detail and accountability for protecting city equipment and property
