Engineer Senior Principal – Optical – Focal Plane Systems

About the Role

As a Senior Principal Optical Engineer specializing in focal plane systems, you will oversee the architecture, design, and validation of complex infrared and visible-light detector assemblies. This role demands deep expertise across multiple engineering disciplines: you'll integrate optical components with advanced sensor arrays, manage thermal interfaces in cryogenic environments, and ensure system performance meets stringent mission requirements. Your work directly impacts critical space surveillance capabilities.

What You'll Do

• Architect electro-optical focal plane subsystems from concept through deployment
• Direct optical design and analysis of imaging sensors and detector networks
• Manage thermal and cryogenic interface engineering to maintain detector performance
• Oversee integration of high-speed readout electronics with optical and sensor components
• Lead cross-functional teams across optical, electrical, mechanical, and materials disciplines
• Establish and validate performance specifications for space-qualified systems
• Drive innovation in advanced materials applications within focal plane assemblies

What We're Looking For

• 10+ years of experience in optical engineering, sensor systems, or related electro-optical fields
• Demonstrated expertise in focal plane array design, infrared detector physics, or space payload systems
• Strong foundation in optical physics, materials science, and thermal management principles
• Proven ability to manage complex, multi-disciplinary engineering programs
• Experience with space-qualified component selection and mission-critical validation protocols
• Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Materials Science preferred
• Active security clearance or ability to obtain one
