Subject Matter Expert (Materials Engineer) with Security Clearance

FWI seeks a Subject Matter Expert in Materials Engineering with security clearance eligibility to serve as a senior technical authority supporting the Bureau of Industry and Security's Defense Industrial Base Division in Washington, D.C. In this full-time role, you'll provide expert analysis on industrial base capacity, supply chain resilience, and manufacturing capability critical to U.S. national security and trade policy.

About the Role

As a Materials Engineer Subject Matter Expert, you'll be the senior technical authority for assessments of the domestic industrial base, particularly in materials science, manufacturing processes, and supply chain dynamics. You'll partner with policy analysts and government officials to evaluate industrial capacity, support Section 232 national security investigations, and inform strategic decisions that strengthen American industrial resilience.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct rigorous industrial base assessments evaluating U.S. materials production capacity and supply chain dependencies
  • Lead technical analysis for Section 232 investigations examining critical materials, manufacturing processes, and strategic industries
  • Develop manufacturing and supply chain assessments that inform national security policy and trade decisions
  • Advise analysts and leadership on materials engineering challenges, industrial capabilities, and manufacturing trends
  • Research global market conditions, competitor capabilities, and domestic production constraints
  • Prepare technical reports and briefings translating complex engineering analysis into actionable policy recommendations

What We're Looking For

  • Advanced degree or extensive professional experience in materials science, materials engineering, or related manufacturing field
  • Demonstrated expertise evaluating industrial processes, manufacturing capability, and supply chain operations
  • Strong analytical and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with government analysts, policy teams, and subject matter experts
  • Current or eligible for a U.S. security clearance
  • Knowledge of government processes, trade policy, or national security considerations is valuable
