Electrical Engineer

Afference, a neurotechnology company headquartered in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, is seeking a full-time Electrical Engineer to help build the next generation of haptic wearable devices at the frontier of spatial computing.

About the Role

As an Electrical Engineer at Afference, you will work where neuroscience meets hardware design, developing the electrical systems behind wearable devices that stimulate peripheral nerves to produce lifelike tactile sensations. Your circuits will power technology that fundamentally changes how people receive notifications, interact with immersive 3D content, engage with physical AI, and access real-time health data — all from a compact device worn on the body.

What You'll Do

• Design, simulate, and refine analog and digital circuitry for nerve-stimulation and haptic wearable platforms
• Own PCB schematic capture and layout from early concept through production-ready release
• Build and characterize hardware prototypes; isolate and resolve performance, signal integrity, and reliability issues
• Optimize designs for low power consumption, miniaturization, and design-for-manufacturing requirements
• Collaborate with firmware, software, and neuroscience teams to integrate electrical subsystems into a cohesive product
• Support EMC and EMI testing and guide designs toward compliance for wearable consumer electronics
• Maintain accurate design documentation, component specifications, and participate in formal design reviews

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline
• Demonstrated experience designing and debugging mixed-signal (analog and digital) circuits
• Proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, or equivalent
• Solid understanding of low-power embedded hardware and battery-managed portable devices
• Strong fundamentals in signal integrity, power delivery, and component selection
• Practical skill with lab instrumentation — oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, and bench power supplies
• Experience in bioelectronics, medical devices, or consumer wearables is a meaningful plus
• Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, cross-disciplinary startup setting where scope evolves quickly
