Oakland Unified School District is building an Academic Mentor – Elementary eligibility pool for the 2026-27 school year, giving qualified candidates in Oakland, Alameda County an opportunity to be screened and considered for part-time hourly openings as they become available across OUSD elementary campuses.

About the Role

This is an eligibility pool posting, not an advertisement for a specific current vacancy. Submitting an application places you in a pool of screened candidates who may be contacted when site-level Academic Mentor openings arise. Candidates are encouraged to also apply directly to any school-specific postings of interest. This part-time, hourly position requires regular timesheet submission.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver targeted academic support to elementary-age students in small-group or one-on-one settings, focusing on foundational literacy and numeracy skills
  • Reinforce classroom instruction under the guidance of credentialed teachers and school staff
  • Track and document student engagement and progress to inform instructional adjustments
  • Build positive, encouraging relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and learning profiles
  • Collaborate with teachers, coordinators, and families to align support strategies with individual student goals
  • Submit accurate timesheets and maintain required records in accordance with district procedures

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in education, child development, or a related field preferred
  • Prior experience supporting children in an academic, tutoring, or youth-program setting
  • Clear, patient communication style and genuine enthusiasm for working with elementary-age learners
  • Ability to follow structured lesson plans and adapt support techniques to individual student needs
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable with hourly timekeeping and reporting requirements
  • Commitment to equity and to closing opportunity gaps in a diverse urban school community
