Hensel Phelps is seeking a full-time Field Engineer to join the team on the Auburn University project in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama — an opportunity to contribute to a landmark build with one of the nation's most respected construction firms.
About the Role
As a Field Engineer on this project, you'll work at the intersection of planning and execution — translating design intent into real-world construction while keeping quality, safety, and schedule in sharp focus. You'll collaborate closely with superintendents, project managers, subcontractors, and owners to keep the job moving.
What You'll Do
- Support day-to-day field operations, coordinating with subcontractors and trade partners to maintain project schedule and workflow
- Process and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, and other project documentation
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents to resolve field conditions
- Assist with quantity tracking, cost reporting, and budget documentation
- Conduct quality control inspections and document field observations
- Promote and uphold Hensel Phelps safety standards on site at all times
- Coordinate material deliveries, equipment, and logistics to support uninterrupted construction progress
- Participate in project meetings and contribute to schedule updates and look-ahead planning
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent field experience
- Foundational understanding of construction methods, materials, and sequencing
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across multiple trades
- Proficiency with project management software and construction document platforms
- A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced field environment
- Willingness to complete pre-employment requirements including work authorization verification, substance abuse screening, and background checks as applicable
