Portsmouth Public Schools is hiring a dedicated Reading Specialist at Churchland Elementary in Portsmouth, Portsmouth City — a full-time, on-site opportunity to strengthen early literacy and help every young learner reach grade-level reading benchmarks.
About the Role
As a Reading Specialist at Churchland Elementary, you will partner closely with classroom teachers to support students who are not yet meeting literacy goals. Reporting to the Building Principal and the Coordinator of Elementary English, you will coordinate targeted reading intervention and guide each child's progress through individualized reading plans. This is an exempt, full-time position (Pay Grade 710) based in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee reading intervention for elementary students performing below literacy benchmarks.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to align instruction and identify students who need additional support.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individual student reading plans.
- Track and document student reading progress, adjusting strategies based on assessment data.
- Provide guidance and resources to teachers to reinforce literacy growth across the school.
Qualifications
- Background and training in elementary reading instruction, literacy intervention, and reading specialist practices.
- Experience assessing reading levels and designing data-informed intervention plans.
- Strong collaboration skills for working alongside teachers, coordinators, and building leadership.
- Ability to monitor progress and tailor support to the needs of individual learners.
- Appropriate state certification or licensure for a reading specialist role, as required by the division.
