About the Role As our Sports Reporter, you'll be the primary voice covering high school, college, and community sports throughout Sandoval County. You'll develop relationships with coaches, athletes, and athletic directors; attend games and events; and deliver compelling narratives that capture the excitement and achievement of local athletics. Your work will appear in print each week and online daily, reaching thousands of readers who depend on us for comprehensive sports coverage. What You'll Do Cover high school athletics, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and other seasonal sports Report on college and amateur sports affecting the community Conduct in-depth interviews with athletes, coaches, and family members Write game recaps, features, columns, and breaking sports news on deadline Develop multimedia content including photos and video for digital platforms Meet daily publishing deadlines while maintaining accuracy and journalistic standards Collaborate with editors to shape editorial coverage and story assignments What We're Looking For Proven sports journalism experience or strong portfolio demonstrating sports reporting ability Strong writing skills in AP style with ability to work under deadline pressure Proficiency in photography and digital media skills valued Knowledge of high school and amateur athletics Ability to build sources and cultivate relationships within the sports community Reliable transportation to cover games and events across Sandoval County Commitment to accuracy, fairness, and journalistic integrity About The Rio Rancho Observer The Rio Rancho Observer has served Sandoval County with quality journalism that combines editorial depth with digital immediacy.
