We're seeking an experienced distributed systems engineer to lead the design and evolution of our service mesh fabric, enabling seamless communication across hybrid on-premises and cloud environments. What This Role Involves Based at our San Mateo headquarters, you'll work onsite Tuesday through Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday. You'll own the service mesh infrastructure that forms the backbone of Roblox's microservices architecture. Working with both Kubernetes and Nomad orchestrators, you'll develop networking solutions that handle massive scale—from sidecar injection and mutual TLS to traffic management and multi-cluster routing. Your work directly enables Cloud Bursting, our strategic initiative to transparently extend services from on-premises data centers into the cloud, ensuring reliability during peak demand and regional failover scenarios. Key Responsibilities Design and build service mesh infrastructure supporting hybrid Kubernetes and Nomad environments handling billions of daily requests Lead Kubernetes integration efforts, implementing reliable sidecar injection, mutual TLS, traffic policies, and observability for production workloads Build the networking foundation enabling Cloud Bursting, with service discovery, traffic management, and locality-aware routing across on-prem and cloud Partner with application teams to understand connectivity challenges and deliver a seamless, developer-friendly service mesh experience Collaborate with Gateway and CNI teams on multi-cluster service fabric that abstracts infrastructure boundaries from developers Serve as primary escalation point for complex service mesh issues, troubleshooting Envoy sidecars, Istio control planes, and network stacks Mentor junior engineers and champion best practices in testing, deployment, and reliability engineering Who We're Looking For 3+ years of experience in distributed systems with deep expertise in service mesh technologies including Istio, Envoy, Consul, or Linkerd Thorough knowledge of service mesh concepts: traffic management, service discovery, mutual TLS, observability, and routing policies Production experience running Kubernetes and solid understanding of Kubernetes networking models Hands-on experience with Envoy proxy internals, xDS APIs, and control plane architecture Strong design skills for large-scale distributed systems spanning multiple clusters, regions, and runtime environments Proficiency in Go, C/C++, or Rust Experience…
