Smith & Nephew is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer - Packaging to join its sports medicine product development group in Mansfield, MA. This full-time, on-site role puts you at the center of designing packaging that safeguards advanced medical devices from the factory to the operating room.

About the Role

As a Senior R&D Engineer focused on packaging at Smith & Nephew in Mansfield, Bristol County, you will help bring innovative medical technologies to clinicians and patients. Working within a results-driven product development team, you will define how next-generation sports medicine devices are protected, sterilized, and delivered — directly influencing product integrity, usability, and the experience at the point of care.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead packaging design and development efforts for new and existing medical device programs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional R&D, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure packaging meets functional and regulatory requirements.
• Plan and execute packaging validation, testing, and verification activities throughout the product lifecycle.
• Support the transition of products from development into reliable, scalable production.
• Document designs and decisions in line with applicable medical device standards and internal procedures.

Qualifications

• A degree in engineering, packaging, or a related technical discipline.
• Demonstrated experience in packaging engineering, ideally within medical devices or another regulated industry.
• Strong grasp of packaging materials, testing methods, and validation principles.
• Proven ability to manage projects and communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness to work on-site in Mansfield, MA in this full-time position.
