We’re looking for an experienced Regulatory Counsel based in Australia to join Discord’s legal team! Reporting to the Director, Global Regulatory Legal, you’ll lead and implement Discord’s regulatory response and proactive legal engagement strategy for APAC (including Australia and New Zealand) on regulatory matters impacting Discord, and supporting in other regions as available. You’ll play a critical role on Discord’s Legal team and collaborate with colleagues throughout the company as you successfully advocate for Discord.
This is an international position based in Australia employed by an international PEO.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead and implement Discord’s responses to regulatory requests including: assess the incentive (or threat) posed to Discord by the inquiry; gather and organize responsive data and information; and draft accurate, compelling responses that meet our obligations and further Discord’s interests.
- Meet with and present to relevant regulatory authorities on Discord’s approach to regulatory compliance and proactively cultivate positive working relationships with key regulators across the region to support long-term engagement and trust.
- Prepare risk assessments, online safety reports, and other relevant reports for regulatory entities in-region.
- Together with Public Policy and Policy Legal, monitor new and updated regulations and anticipate enforcement risks. Support Policy Legal and Product Legal teams in developing internal analyses of laws applicable to Discord and strategic positioning in light of new developments.
- Collaborate with our public policy and communications teams in connection with Discord’s public policy engagement and safety communications strategies and play a role in presenting our narrative.
- Together with fellow regulatory counsels, maintain up-to-date canonical templates for company practices and positions on topics such as privacy, security, teen safety, etc.
What you should have:
- 7+ years working in regulatory legal related to Internet regulation (e.g., online safety, user safety, minor safety, privacy, data protection, consumer protection).
- License to practice law in Australia
- Experience working with or for a company in the communication/messaging, content or gaming spaces.
- Deep knowledge of Australia’s regulatory landscape across platform regulations, privacy rights, data protection, and consumer protection
- Familiarity with broader APAC regulatory environments, or demonstrated ability to quickly ramp up on regional requirements
- Experience preparing and submitting responses to requests for information, risk assessments, and reports required by relevant regulatory agencies.
- Experience meeting with applicable regulators in Australia, and if possible, Korea, Japan, and other countries in-region.
- Excellent writer and communicator who can tailor the message to the audience.
- Willingness to take on any project, from large to small.
- High emotional intelligence including being open and humble, courageous, a good collaborator, flexible, and demonstrating a growth-mindset and kindness.
Bonus Points:
- You are familiar with Discord.
- In-house experience at a consumer-facing technology platform.
- Relevant litigation experience.
