Breaking Ground
Breaking Ground is hiring a full-time Engineer to help keep 90 Sands, our supportive housing residence in DUMBO, Brooklyn, New York City, running safely and reliably for the people who call it home.
About the Role
As an Engineer at Breaking Ground, you will be a hands-on member of the building operations team at 90 Sands, a 30-story residence in Brooklyn that provides 491 units of permanent, supportive housing. This on-site role is central to maintaining the comfort, safety, and dependable functioning of a property that serves low-income New Yorkers, people living with HIV/AIDS, and individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness, including those living with mental illness.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, inspect, and maintain the building's mechanical, electrical, plumbing, heating, and HVAC systems.
- Carry out preventive maintenance and respond promptly to repair requests across residential units and shared spaces.
- Keep amenity areas — including the multipurpose community room and the digital library and computer lab — in good working order.
- Monitor equipment performance, troubleshoot issues, and escalate larger repairs as needed.
- Help ensure the property meets applicable safety, building, and code requirements.
- Document maintenance activity and coordinate with building staff and outside contractors.
Qualifications
- Practical experience maintaining and repairing building systems in a residential, commercial, or multi-unit setting.
- Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general mechanical systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently on site in Brooklyn.
- A commitment to the dignity and well-being of residents in a supportive housing environment.
- Any licenses or certifications relevant to building engineering are a plus.
