Wellhub is hiring a Director Software Engineer (Hands-On) for a full-time remote role in Portugal, leading the technical vision and execution of our platform that helps organizations implement workforce wellness at global scale. The Opportunity Our CIA Focus Area team builds the central infrastructure that allows enterprises to configure, deliver, and track their employee wellness programs. You'll oversee the engineers, designers, and product managers building systems our business customers depend on. As a hands-on technical leader, you'll write code alongside your team while setting engineering strategy, mentoring emerging leaders, and ensuring our architecture remains resilient and forward-thinking as we grow. Key Responsibilities Own the technical architecture and delivery of critical platform services, building for scale and long-term operational resilience. Set technical strategy across engineering teams, maintaining architectural consistency and driving product alignment with business objectives. Work alongside product, design, and analytics leaders to scope and execute initiatives that unlock new customer value. Build and develop engineering managers and senior engineers, creating a team culture that values learning and excellence. Manage vendor integrations and external APIs, safeguarding data security and system performance. Champion efforts to modernize and optimize existing systems for performance, reliability, and team productivity. Establish and maintain operational discipline through monitoring, alerting, and incident response standards. Create a transparent, supportive team environment where engineers feel motivated and see clear paths forward in their careers. Requirements Experience managing multiple teams of engineers in dynamic, customer-focused settings. Demonstrated ability to architect and scale complex, multi-service systems supporting high availability and performance. Production experience with AWS, GCP, or similar cloud providers; solid grasp of cloud architecture principles. Experience designing REST or gRPC APIs and coordinating work across backend and frontend specialties. Grounding in computer science fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, and systems-level thinking. Hands-on work with SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL stores (DynamoDB, MongoDB) including performance tuning. Ability to articulate technical strategy in writing and conversations with engineering and business stakeholders across teams and time zones.
