About the Role
The School Counselor at EVHS works under the direction of the High School Principal and serves as a cornerstone of student well-being, academic achievement, and post-secondary readiness. This is a union position governed by a 173-day contract, operating Monday through Thursday from 7:24 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and compensated according to the Espanola Public Schools pay schedule. The position is classified as non-exempt.
What You'll Do
- Deliver individual and group counseling to support students' academic, social, emotional, and career development needs
- Guide students through course selection, credit planning, and academic goal-setting aligned with graduation requirements
- Assist students with college exploration, application processes, scholarship identification, and post-secondary planning
- Implement crisis intervention protocols and connect students to appropriate school and community resources
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to develop coordinated support strategies for at-risk students
- Contribute to 504 plan coordination and serve as a liaison between instruction and student support services
- Monitor student attendance trends and work with school teams to address barriers to consistent engagement
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with district and state requirements
- Facilitate classroom guidance lessons and schoolwide programming that promote positive school culture
What We're Looking For
- A valid New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) School Counselor License or Student Success Advisor credential — required
- Master's degree in school counseling or a closely related field (typically required for NMPED licensure)
- Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships with high school-age students from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Working knowledge of college admissions timelines, financial aid processes, and career pathways
- Experience with or training in crisis intervention and trauma-informed counseling approaches
- Strong organizational skills and comfort managing a caseload across multiple student populations
- Effective communication with students, families, and school staff — bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus in this community
