Assistant Professor of Mathematics – Continuous Mathematics

Oakland University's Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics with a specialization in continuous mathematics, based at the Rochester, Oakland County campus.

About the Role

This is a tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level within a collegial and research-active department. The position is slated to begin August 15, 2025, and carries responsibilities across research, teaching, and university service. Candidates whose work falls within continuous mathematics — including but not limited to partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations, variational methods, and continuous optimization — are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, including courses aligned with your area of specialization in continuous mathematics
  • Develop and sustain an independent, externally visible research program in continuous mathematics or an adjacent field
  • Publish original findings in peer-reviewed mathematics journals and present at professional conferences
  • Pursue external grant funding to support research activities and graduate student mentorship
  • Advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics
  • Contribute to departmental curriculum development and participate in departmental, college, and university governance
  • Collaborate with faculty across the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on interdisciplinary initiatives

What We're Looking For

  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Mathematics or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date
  • Demonstrated specialization in continuous mathematics — research areas such as PDEs, ODEs, variational analysis, or continuous optimization are particularly relevant
  • Evidence of a productive research agenda, including publications or manuscripts in progress
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching at both introductory and advanced levels
  • Ability to attract or potential to secure external research funding
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills suited to a diverse academic environment
