Architect – Critical Facilities

Gensler is seeking an experienced Architect – Critical Facilities to join our practice in Washington, D.C., shaping the resilient, mission-critical environments that power our increasingly connected world.

About the Role

Data has become one of the most essential forms of infrastructure of our era. Its creation, storage, exchange, and stewardship underpin nearly every aspect of modern life—so much so that the United Nations recognizes internet access as a fundamental human right. As an Architect specializing in Critical Facilities at Gensler, you will help design the spaces that safeguard this infrastructure, contributing to projects spanning a broad range of types and scales across the sixteen critical sectors defined by industry and government partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop architectural solutions for data centers and other mission-critical facilities throughout all project phases.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, engineers, and stakeholders to deliver high-performance, resilient built environments.
• Translate complex technical and operational requirements into clear, buildable design documentation.
• Support clients across industry and government sectors, balancing reliability, security, and sustainability.
• Contribute to the continued growth of Gensler's Critical Facilities practice in the Washington, D.C. market.

Qualifications

• Professional degree in Architecture and relevant experience in the field.
• Background in critical facilities, data centers, or comparable technically demanding project types.
• Strong knowledge of building systems, codes, and coordination with engineering disciplines.
• Proficiency with industry-standard architectural design and documentation tools.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work on-site in Washington, D.C.
