Position Description
Advanced Energy United is currently seeking a highly energetic, smart, self-starting Senior Policy Principal with a background in legislative work and/or issue advocacy to lead United’s state-level legislative and political engagement in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The Senior Principal will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with legislative and administrative decision-makers, managing and executing on United’s Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island strategy, and working collaboratively with other United team members to win policy outcomes that accelerate the energy transition and expand markets for the advanced energy industry. New England states have passed some of the nation’s most ambitious clean energy goals and are home to tremendous clean energy resources, but there is much work to be done to make those clean energy goals a reality. Our current policy priorities include advancing transmission solutions needed to support offshore wind and other clean energy resources; ensuring our electric grid is strengthened to support electric vehicles; and maximizing the use of energy efficiency and demand response technologies.

A Mind for Policy: Market opportunities for the advanced energy industry are driven by policy. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes, and experience with energy policy specifically is aplus.
Small “p” Political Awareness: Recognizing opportunity, understanding powerdynamicsand building coalitions to seize policy opportunities are keys to success for winning victories on our issues. The ideal candidatedoesn’tneed to have a background in politics but does need to be familiar with political processes and be excited about engaging in the political side ofpolicy-making.
Project Management Skills & A Drive to Get Things Done: The ideal candidate will be able to coordinate and drive team efforts from start to finish, keeping organized and navigating relationships with partners in multiple arenas.
Responsibilities
- Lead Advanced Energy United’s work inMassachusetts,Connecticutand Rhode Island, workingcollaboratively withUnitedpolicy team members on developing and implementing strategies to acceleratethetransition to100% clean energyand electrified transportation,and meet short- and long-term policyobjectivesas part of United’s policy portfolio. These could be legislative, administrative, or regulatory, or a mix of all three.
- Work with Advanced Energy United member companies to develop policy positions and reachconsensus on policy positionson key issues.
- Manage lobbyist relationships on the ground and their engagement in legislative strategy and execution.
- Organize member engagement opportunities through direct decision-maker engagement including lobby days, legislator andcandidate education, earned media, and participationin legislative, regulatory, and administrative processes, as needed.
- Develop andmaintainexcellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, and key legislative and administrative staff. Engage in coordination and advocacy efforts with coalition allies in support of clean energy goals.
- Create reports, presentations, fact sheets, and other written and visual materials needed for education and advocacy efforts and deliver verbalpresentationsas necessary.
- Work with our communications team toidentifyopportunities for Advanced Energy United to seek earned media coverage. Draft press statements,do media interviews,write blog posts,participatein webinars, and create opportunities toshowcaseadvanced energy.
- Travel on an as needed basis (up to 30%) within Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Islandand occasionally elsewhere,for advocacy days, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and other efforts on behalf of Advanced Energy United.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Engineering, or Communications focus preferred) or applicable comparable experience;Master’sdegree is a plus.
- Minimum offiveyearsof professional experience in legislative policy development, campaign work, or organizing in the energy sector; working with business leaders is a plus.A strong preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience in New York.
- Interest in energy and transportation issues and an understanding of the importance of policy advocacy to advance an organizational agenda.
- Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in professional settings leading team efforts toward an agreed upongoal, andbeing responsible fordelivering quality finished products.
- Excellent interpersonal relationship-building and communications skills, both written and verbal.
- Must be willing to travel(up to20%).
