About the Role

As an Assistant Public Defender I with the Delaware Office of Defense Services, you will serve on the frontlines of public defense, representing individuals who cannot afford private counsel. ODS is Delaware's primary public defender agency, dedicated to fair and respectful treatment for every person navigating the justice system — regardless of income, background, or circumstance.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide zealous legal representation to indigent clients in criminal proceedings
• Conduct client interviews, review evidence, and develop effective defense strategies
• Appear in court for hearings, motions, and trials on behalf of assigned clients
• Collaborate with investigators, social workers, and support staff to build comprehensive case strategies
• Uphold clients' constitutional rights at every stage of the legal process
• Maintain accurate and timely case documentation in compliance with ODS standards

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
• Active membership in good standing with the Delaware Bar, or eligibility to waive in
• Strong written and oral advocacy skills
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice
• Ability to manage a demanding caseload with professionalism and attention to detail
