Tax Manager

Lavine Lofgren Morris & Engelberg LLP is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to join their team at their La Jolla office in San Diego County, California.

About the Role

As a Tax Manager at Lavine Lofgren Morris & Engelberg LLP, you will take ownership of complex tax engagements across a diverse client portfolio, serving as a trusted advisor while leading technical tax work from review through resolution. This full-time position is based on-site in La Jolla and offers the opportunity to grow within an established San Diego County public accounting firm.

What You'll Do

• Review federal and state income tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts, ensuring accuracy and compliance
• Build and maintain strong client relationships, demonstrating deep familiarity with each client's industry and business circumstances
• Draft internal memoranda, written guidance, private letter rulings, and correspondence submitted to the IRS, U.S. Treasury Department, and other taxing authorities
• Serve as a primary point of contact for clients on tax planning, compliance questions, and IRS matters
• Mentor and support junior staff, reviewing their work and helping develop their technical skills
• Stay current on federal and California state tax law changes and communicate their impact to clients and internal teams

What We're Looking For

• CPA license (active and in good standing) strongly preferred
• Significant public accounting experience with a focus on tax, including review-level responsibility for multi-entity returns
• Hands-on experience with individual, partnership, corporate (C-Corp and S-Corp), and fiduciary/trust tax returns
• Proven ability to manage client relationships and communicate complex tax concepts clearly
• Experience preparing or reviewing correspondence and technical documents for tax authorities
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously during peak seasons
• Familiarity with California state and local tax matters is a plus
