Sargent Lundy is hiring a Senior Distribution Designer 1 – Grid to join its growing engineering team in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, supporting critical electric distribution infrastructure projects across the region.

About the Role

As a Senior Distribution Designer 1 on Sargent Lundy's Grid team, you will contribute to complex utility distribution projects from design through construction-ready deliverables. Working alongside engineers and fellow designers under the guidance of a project lead, you'll apply your knowledge of distribution design practices to produce accurate, code-compliant drawings and construction packages for overhead and underground power systems.

What You'll Do

• Develop construction sketches, details, and design packages for overhead and underground network distribution systems operating in the 4 kV through 34 kV range
• Prepare traffic control plans and related civil coordination documents required for field construction activities
• Collaborate within a multidisciplinary project team, contributing to design reviews and coordinating drawing production schedules
• Apply utility and industry standards — including NESC requirements — to ensure designs meet safety, reliability, and regulatory criteria
• Use CAD and design tools to produce accurate, production-quality drawings and redlines
• Support project leads in tracking design progress and resolving technical issues as they arise in the field or during review cycles

What We're Looking For

• Hands-on experience designing overhead and underground electrical distribution systems in the utility or engineering consulting sector
• Familiarity with distribution voltage classes from 4 kV through 34 kV and the construction methods associated with each
• Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent) used in utility distribution design environments
• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and applicable local utility standards
• Experience producing traffic control plans or coordinating with municipal permitting processes is a plus
• Strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple drawing sets simultaneously, and clear communication within a team setting
• An associate degree in drafting, engineering technology, or a related discipline — or equivalent professional experience in utility distribution design
