About the Role
As a Firearms Examiner with Anne Arundel County, you will apply forensic science methods to evaluate firearms, ammunition, and related evidence in support of criminal investigations. Working from Annapolis, you will produce reliable, defensible findings that assist law enforcement and the justice system. This is a full-time, in-person position; it is not remote.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct technical examinations of firearms, cartridge cases, bullets, and ammunition components.
- Perform comparative analysis to determine whether specimens were fired from a particular weapon.
- Test the functionality and operability of firearms submitted as evidence.
- Document examinations thoroughly and prepare clear, accurate forensic reports.
- Maintain chain-of-custody integrity and follow established laboratory protocols.
- Provide expert testimony in legal proceedings when called upon.
Qualifications
- A strong foundation in forensic science, criminal justice, or a closely related discipline.
- Knowledge of firearms identification principles, ballistics, and laboratory safety practices.
- Exceptional attention to detail and sound, evidence-based judgment.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills suitable for reports and courtroom testimony.

Compensation
The posted salary range reflects the offer range for this position. Starting pay will be determined based on a candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, and internal equity. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be eligible for a rate up to 50% above the minimum starting salary. The minimum starting salary is scheduled to increase effective July 1, 2026.
