Whether or not you hold United Scenic Artists membership, if you live near Kansas City, this is your invitation to join our production community.
About the Role
As a Freelance Designer with Kansas City Repertory Theatre's Production Department, you'll contribute your artistic vision to projects across our season. We are building a flexible pool of local design talent we can call on as productions take shape, giving you the chance to lend your craft to professional, story-driven theatre in the Kansas City area.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with directors, production staff, and fellow artists to realize the creative vision of each production.
- Develop original design concepts that support storytelling and serve the needs of the stage.
- Translate ideas into actionable plans, renderings, or specifications for the production team.
- Partner with shop and technical crews to bring designs from concept to opening night.
- Work within the practical parameters of schedule, space, and resources for each project.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience designing for live theatre or comparable performance settings.
- A portfolio that reflects your creative range and craftsmanship.
- Residence within roughly 50 miles of Kansas City; United Scenic Artists membership is welcome but not required.
- Strong collaborative instincts and reliable, deadline-aware communication.
- Availability to work on-site in the Mission Woods, Johnson County area as productions require.
